When paying to a crypto wallet for the first time, it’s important to verify that the recipient can access the funds. Test payments help ensure wallet ownership before larger amounts are sent. This guide explains how test payments work, and how a wallet gets marked as “Verified”.
How it works
The test payment flow has 4 simple steps:
1. Check the recipient's wallet verification status
Whenever you open a crypto payable (bill, salary, etc.), Request shows you the verification status of the recipient's wallet(s) (→ What does the wallet status next to an address mean?)
2. New wallet or it's been a while since you paid them? Send a small test amount
Send a test payment to verify new or wallet addresses you haven't paid in a while. We recommend sending an amount you won’t miss: it’s purely to verify ownership. You’ll see the transaction details, including:
Who initiated the test
The date and time
A link to view the test payment on-chain
Funds send via test payments are not retrievable. They also don't reduce the amount of the underlying payable.
If you want to batch multiple test payments together, you can abort the flow after clicking Send Test Payment, set up other test payments and batch pay via the Direct Payment menu (see Can I batch pay test payments?)
3. We notify the recipient
Once the test payment is sent, the recipient will receive an email, asking them to confirm they’ve received and can access the funds (→ What does the recipient of a test payment see?).
4. Recipient confirms access
The recipient must confirm they received the funds and can access the wallet. Once confirmed:
The wallet will be marked as Verified
You’ll be able to send full payments with confidence
Optional: Manually mark the wallet as verified
If you’re certain the wallet is controlled by the intended recipient, you can tick the box to Manually mark wallet as "verified". This skips the confirmation step.
Use this option only if you’re 100% sure of the wallet’s ownership.
Can I run another test?
Yes! Click Make Another Test to start the process again for the same or a different wallet.
